The Marine & Environmental Research Institute (MERI) is a nonprofit scientific 
organization dedicated to protecting wildlife and people from the harmful 
impacts of toxic chemicals. The Institute investigates the environmental causes 
of disease and inspires solutions to pressing environmental issues. Priority 
focus areas include: microplastics in the ocean food web; toxic contaminants 
and health of marine sentinel species (marine mammals), and coastal monitoring

Job Description

The Marine & Environmental Research Institute (MERI) is recruiting to fill a 
Media & Communications internship in May/June 2017. This internship is an 
exciting opportunity for a recent graduate with strong  research, writing and 
technical communication skills to gain hands-on experience in communicating 
environmental science to the public through a variety of media. The individual 
who fills this position will be a highly organized, effective communicator with 
excellent written and graphic communications skills who is able to work well 
under pressure both independently and as part of a team. This position requires 
proficiency in print and electronic media, Web content management systems 
(CMS), video editing, and social media tools, as well as familiarity with 
systems support. Working with senior communications staff and our 
branding/graphics firm, the intern will contribute to MERI’s research, 
marketing, and outreach initiatives, including the environmental lecture series.

 

Internship Responsibilities

Work with communications staff and branding/graphics firm to:

Provide electronic and printed marketing materials, including e blasts, flyers, 
advertisements, factsheets, newsletters, and brochures.
Conduct graphics and content research for PowerPoint presentations and other 
materials.
Monitor media outlets and help produce internal and external communications 
materials to inform the public on relevant breaking news.
Update the website, contribute content, graphics and visuals, and develop video 
content.
Contribute to social media outreach, including blogs, Facebook posts, and 
YouTube/Vimeos.
Support the environmental lecture series and other in-house programs; help 
develop graphics for on- and offline promotional materials (flyers, fact 
sheets, e blasts). Manage the A/V system, record and edit audiovisual content 
for social media (Vimeos), PowerPoint presentations, and other applications.
Enhance and organize the image library as materials are acquired, so images are 
consistently labeled and made accessible to users.
Assist with projects and perform other duties as assigned by the Director.
 

 

Qualifications

REQUIRED

§  Applicant should possess or be actively pursuing a BA, BS or Master’s degree 
in science or environmental communications/policy, marketing, environmental 
journalism/ documentary film, or a related field from an accredited university.

§  A high level of computer literacy. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, 
database, Adobe Creative Suite, and database and literature searching platforms.

§  Demonstrated experience in print and electronic communication systems and 
technologies.

§  Proficiency in print and electronic media, as well as photography, video and 
use of social media tools.

§  Proficiency with Power Point presentations, website CMS

Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills.
Detail-oriented, able to meet deadlines, work collaboratively as part of a 
team, and adapt to fast-paced environment.
Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license.
Strong interest in the environment and a commitment to promoting the MERI 
mission.
 

DESIRED

§  Experience working in environmental health science/policy, journalism, film, 
or related fields
§  Photography skills a plus.

Time Requirements

This position requires a 6-month commitment beginning in May/June 2017, 
although start and end dates are flexible. Full-time hours (40 hours/week); 
additional hours may be required at times to complete projects or meet 
deadlines. Must be able to participate in occasional evening and weekend events.

Compensation: 

Stipend and shared housing in Blue Hill, Maine.  Housing is within walking 
distance to the Institute. Interns are responsible for all non-work related 
travel expenses and food.
