PhD position on: Spatial thresholds of habitat availability and quality in
metapopulations (based in New Zealand)

The project will examine the interplay of population dynamics, dispersal
networks and habitat quality in determining the appropriate scale for
conservation management. As a model system, it has a specific focus on the
conservation of black swans in lowland lakes subject to eutrophication.
Much of the work will involve spatial and network analysis, so a strong
quantitative background will be an advantage.

The student will be based in the international research group of Prof.
Jason Tylianakis in the School of Biological Sciences, University of
Canterbury New Zealand, but will be working in close collaboration with
Prof. Angus McIntosh from the School, and Drs Phil Lyver and Chris Jones
from Landcare Research-Manaaki Whenua. The University of Canterbury values
diversity and we encourage all suitably-qualified people to apply.

This 3-year PhD project is positioned within a larger project examining
the role of Maori (indigenous peoples of NZ) customary approaches and
practices ("kaitiakitanga") in environmental management. The goal of the
wider project is to determine how Maori resource management strategies and
interventions facilitate the recovery of floral and faunal populations,
enhance ecosystem resilience, and support customary use of native (and
introduced) biodiversity. Therefore, an important aspect of this work is
the close collaboration with Maori stakeholders and land managers, and an
interest in issues relating to indigenous people and a motivation for
meaningful collaborative interactions with Maori are essential for this
project. This scholarship, which provides a stipend and covers study fees,
is co-funded by the University of Canterbury and Landcare Research-Maanaki
Whenua.
