*Augustana College-Environmental Studies Visiting Assistant Professor
Position*


The Environmental Studies Program at Augustana College invites applications
for a full-time (10-month) Visiting Assistant Professor beginning August
2016. The position is annually renewable for up to 3 years.  Augustana
College is a selective liberal arts college of 2,500 students, most of whom
live on a wooded 115-acre campus.  Rock Island, Illinois is one of the
Illinois-Iowa Quad Cities along the Mississippi River, a diverse
metropolitan area with 400,000 residents approximately three hours west of
Chicago.

The candidate will play a critical role in teaching courses in the recently
revised Environmental Studies curriculum.  The candidate will also be
expected to work with the Center for Faculty Enrichment and Environmental
Studies Advisory Board to create professional development opportunities for
faculty interested in learning new sustainability-science related pedagogy
and methods.  Candidate will be expected to contribute to Upper Mississippi
Center for Sustainable Communities (UMC) Sustainable Working Landscapes
Initiative or other community-based sustainability projects.


Preference will be given to interdisciplinary candidates with areas of
specialization in the social sciences or humanities (environmental
anthropology, sociology, economics, communications, psychology;
environmental or social justice; political economy; political ecology;
environmental policy and governance; sustainable development).

Required Qualifications

·         Earned an interdisciplinary Ph.D. (ABD considered) in
Sustainability Science or a closely related field emphasizing the human
dimensions of social-ecological systems (Sociology, Geography, Sociology,
etc.).

·         Demonstrated experience teaching project or problem-based social,
economic, or environmental sustainability courses.

·         Demonstrated experience integrating campus and off-campus
sustainability projects and problems into experiential learning
experiences.

·         Demonstrated passion for teaching and integrating and mentoring
undergraduate students in their research.

Preferred Qualifications

·         Demonstrated expertise and experience conducting participatory
(action-oriented) research, working in the decision-making processes,
participating in sustainability policy or politics and engaging diverse
communities in research and problem-solving

·         Broad interdisciplinary training and demonstrated experience in
interdisciplinary team-based teaching.

·         Demonstrated interdisciplinary expertise and experience in root
causal analysis, social network analysis, participatory decision-making,
institutional analysis, stakeholder engagement, adaptive governance and
management, risk analysis, or back-casting and envisioning methods

Teaching responsibilities will include:

(1)   Sustainability Problems and Solutions Analysis, the introductory core
course with a campus project-based learning experience; including a weekly
3-hour lab (ENVR 100)

(2)   Capstone Sustainability Problem (ENVR 450) and Sustainability
Solutions (ENVR 451), an upper-level two-course senior capstone sequence in
which interdisciplinary teams evaluate and formulate solutions to a
community-based sustainability problem. This course is co-taught by an
interdisciplinary team of faculty and includes a 1-credit graduate-style
seminar and 1-credit methods course

(3)   Upper level sustainability course with a significant project or
problem-based experiential learning experience  in the candidate’s area of
expertise (ENVR 380)
