Job description
The Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development at Utrecht
University invites applicants for a tenure-track faculty position in
Ecosystems and Environmental Change at the Assistant Professor level. We
are searching for a highly motivated scholar in the field of
environmental sciences/ecology with a focus on Ecosystems and
Environmental Change, who fits with our interdisciplinary research
group.
The Assistant Professor will contribute to the development of the
portfolio of global change research by contributing to the research
program of the Environmental Science Group, which centers on
environmental change and ecosystems. Your own research theme in this
field is well-matched with the research interests of the group and has
possibilities to link ecological research with hydrological, climate and
land use modeling at different spatial and temporal scales. The
Assistant Professor will strengthen this research line by bridging
experimental and empirical work with modeling.
The position will be affiliated with the Environmental Sciences group,
one of the four research groups of the Copernicus Institute of
Sustainable Development. The Environmental Sciences group is a dynamic,
ambitious and internationally leading team of researchers with a focus
on fundamental and policy-oriented research of environmental processes,
from local to global scales. The Copernicus Institute has been evaluated
in a 2014 international review as the highest ranked research institute
in sustainability sciences in the Netherlands. Since then, the institute
has intensified its efforts in maintaining its leading position, among
others by opening up positions at our Institute for international
scholars and by developing new, internationally oriented teaching
programs.
Qualifications
We encourage applications from candidates with a PhD who: 1) have a
proven affinity with environmental research, terrestrial ecology, eco-
hydrology and combining experimental and empirical work with modelling;
2) have interest in and experience with multidisciplinary and
interdisciplinary research approaches; 3) hands on modelling experience
is an advantage; 4) have a strong record of international peer-reviewed
publications; 5) have successfully acquired and carried out externally
funded projects; 6) have experience teaching university students at
undergraduate and/or graduate level; 7) are well connected to relevant
academic partners as well as to stakeholders in society; 8) have
excellent communication skills and are collaborative.
The candidate is expected to develop an internationally renowned
research line. The candidate will teach in the newly developed BSc
program Global Sustainability Science and the internationally leading
MSc program Sustainable Development. All teaching will be in the English
language. In addition, successful candidates will be expected to
supervise BSc and MSc projects, as well as to contribute to the
acquisition and execution of externally funded projects. Coaching and
supervising PhD students is also one of your responsibilities. You will
be stimulated and coached in applying for a personal research grant.
This position requires a PhD and most preferably at least two years
post-doc research experience at the time of appointment.
Utrecht University has a teaching qualification system for university
lecturers, and candidates are required to obtain the Basic Teaching
Qualification (BKO) if they are not already in possession of one.
Applications should include a motivation letter for the position, a
statement of your research interests, a statement of your teaching
experience and philosophy, a curriculum vitae, and the names and email
addresses of two referees. The deadline for applications is November 15,
2016. Further information about the position and a link to the
