Postdoc in evolutionary ecology
A postdoctoral research position in evolutionary ecology is available in
Dr. Mark Urban’s laboratory at the University of Connecticut in Storrs,
CT. The postdoc will join an NSF-funded project to explore how
immigration and rapid evolution determine the resilience of natural
communities and ecosystems to the climate-fueled increase in a top
predator in temporary ponds using a combination of whole-pond
manipulations, experimental evolution in the field, and genomics.
As winters have warmed, the marbled salamander has increased its
abundance and distribution in ponds in New England. Previous research
demonstrates wholesale changes in communities and ecosystems when this
top predator colonizes a new pond. We will explore if immigration of new
community members or rapid evolution can mediate these changes. The
postdoc will participate in all aspects of the project, including
whole-pond manipulations, common garden experiments, field-based
observations, genomic studies, and analysis. Additional responsibilities
include written and oral communication of research results and mentoring
graduate and undergraduate students. The successful applicant will have
completed a PhD degree in ecology, evolutionary biology, genetics, or a
related field prior to the start date. An excellent publication record,
strong organizational and communication skills, and a demonstrated
ability to work independently are required. Preference will be given to
scientists with experience in one or more of the following areas:
evolutionary ecology, common garden experiments, genomics, and fieldwork
with pond amphibian and invertebrate communities. The position can start
September 2016 – February 2017 with a strong preference for the earlier
dates. The position is for 2 years conditional on exemplary performance.
Salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with experience. To
apply, email Mark Urban ([email protected]) via email 1) a cover
letter that explains your fit to the research position, what novel
insights or skills you would add, and your potential start date; 2) a
complete CV with publications and grants; and 3) the names of two
references. Review of applications will begin June 7th and continue
until the position is filled. For additional information, contact Mark
