*Graduate Student Opportunity*

*Management of Urban Lakes*

The Center for Lakes and Reservoirs at Portland State University (PSU) and
the Lake Oswego Corporation (LOC) announce the availability of a graduate
student position focused on management of urban lakes. The graduate student
will be enrolled in a masters degree program in the Environmental Science
and Management Department or a doctoral degree program in the School of the
Environment at PSU.

The graduate student will conduct routine water quality monitoring on
Oswego Lake, a 415–acre, private, urban lake in the City of Lake Oswego,
Oregon. The lake is located approximately 8 miles south of the PSU campus.
The lake is eutrophic with a history of cyanobacteria blooms. The LOC has
made substantial investments to improve water quality in the lake,
including installation of hypolimnetic aeration and alum injection. In
addition to the routine sampling the student will conduct research on
nutrient dynamics in the lake and surrounding watershed aimed at further
improving water quality in the lake. Potential studies include quantifying
nutrient loading from rooftops and lawns surrounding the lake and studying
internal P-loading from sediments. Additional studies could also be
developed depending on student interest and degree program.

The student will be an employee of the LOC for 20 hours/week at a rate of
$15-17/hr. Tuition support will be provided by PSU. The student will be
responsible for fees associated with enrollment at PSU. The position is
available immediately after admission to the graduate program. Please
review the requirements for application to the masters program at
www.esm.pdx.edu, and information on admission to the doctoral program at
www.pdx.edu/environment/degree-programs-0 . Ideally, the student would be
available to start fieldwork in the summer of 2016 and begin coursework in
the fall of 2016, however, later start and admission dates may also be
possible.

For additional information about the opportunity please contact Mark Sytsma
at PSU ([email protected]) or Mark Rosenkranz at LOC (
[email protected]). For further information on the Center for
Lakes and Reservoirs please visit

> Summary
> We are looking for a highly motivated recent college graduate with a=20
> major in the sciences or computer science who intends to get a PhD but=20=

> who would first like additional research experience. The start date is=20=
>
> May, 2016 or after. The job focuses on (1) running and collecting data=20=
>

> with a Xevo G2-qToF, that we own, is based in our lab, and that we use=20=
>
> for the analysis of plant secondary metabolites and (2) organizing and=20=
>
> analyzing large datasets. Experience with R is recommended. Knowledge

>
> organic chemistry and mass spectrometry is helpful but not required.
> The=20=

> work is based in the laboratory of Tom Kursar and Lissy Coley in the=20
> Biology Department, University of Utah, Salt Lake City. The position is=20=
>

> Details
> We study the ecology and evolution of plant defenses against herbivores=20=
>
> in tropical plants, with a focus on the tree genus Inga (Leguminosae).=20=
>
> Secondary metabolites are traits that have remained largely cryptic.=20
> Recent results show that plant chemistry is key for coexistence and the=20=
>
> high local diversity of tropical forests, and possibly, for the=20
> evolution of new species. Moreover, recent advances in technology,=20
> particularly metabolomics, have improved our ability to quantify plant=20=

> secondary chemistry. Our goal is to characterize the full range of=20
> chemical defenses in many species of Inga. The work focuses on analyses=20=
>
> of samples collected in Panama, Peru, Ecuador, Brazil, and French=20
> Guiana. This requires dedication and attention to detail with both=20
> instrumentation and data management. The work in our lab is part of a=20

>
> of Inga being carried out by collaborators at the Royal Botanic Garden=20=

> ABSTRACT Plants and their herbivores constitute over half of the=20
> organisms in tropical forests. Therefore a better understanding of the=20=
>
> evolution of plant defenses against their herbivores may be central for=20=
>
> our understanding of tropical biodiversity. Here we address the=20
> evolution of anti-herbivore defenses and their possible contribution to=20=
>
> coexistence in the Neotropical tree genus Inga (Fabaceae). Inga has

>
> species, has radiated recently, and is frequently one of the most=20
> diverse and abundant genera at a given site. For 37 species from Panama=20=
>
> and Peru we characterized developmental, ant and chemical defenses=20

> among people, nature, and society in the context of global change.
>
> Thematic topics of the congress:
> - Ecosystem services and management
> - Global climate change and ecosystem adaptation
> - Urbanization and regional environmental change
> - Biogeochemical cycling and ecosystem health
> - Ecological degradation and ecosystem restoration
> - Environmental stress and biodiversity conservation
> - Industrial ecology and green economy

> Call for symposia
>
> To promote collaboration and interdisciplinary dialogue, we invite
> you to propose symposia with specific topics. Proposals are
> encouraged to address the congress theme, if appropriate, but doing
> so is not necessary. Any timely and coherent subject of broad
> ecological interests will be considered. We also welcome proposals
> that explore interdisciplinary connections with areas of social and
> natural science outside of ecology.
>
> Each symposium should have 8 to 10 speakers (15 min. presentations

>
> The deadline for symposium submission is 1 June 2016. Please submit
