I am looking for a field technician with a strong work ethic to assist with a project on spatial and temporal interactions between bison and brown-headed cowbirds at Nachusa Grasslands in Illinois (http://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/illinois/placesweprotect/nachusa-grasslands.xml). The field technician has to be skillful in hand-tracking radio-tagged cowbirds. Field technician also needs to be willing to learn and hence able to correctly operate and adjust, when necessary, multiple Automatic Recording Units (ARUs) for telemetry data acquisition. Field technician is required to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Duties and responsibilities include: Tracking - Conducts daily radio-tracking of female brown-headed cowbirds and records locations with the GPS unit through triangulation or homing. Observations - Records behaviors of bison and female cowbirds when required. Maintenance - Assists with the maintenance and data download from the ARUs. Daily Reports - Submits daily reports on the tracking and observations of bison/cowbirds. Requirements: Successful candidate must have a B.S. degree in environmental science, wildlife, biology, or related field. Experiences in radio-telemetry and working with passerines in the field are highly preferred. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, ArcGIS, and GPS is highly desirable. Successful candidate must be a team-player, demonstrate strong communication skills, follow instructions well, and pay attention to detail. Candidate must have a commitment to field personnel and equipment safety. The individual must have a personal vehicle, maintain a valid driver's license, and be able to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions for long hours.
