Job Title: Research Biologist
Pay Range: $39,000 to $41,000 plus benefits
Duration: Permanent, beginning spring 2016

northern CA

Position Description: Klamath Bird Observatory (www.KlamathBird.org
<http://www.klamathbird.org/>) seeks to fill a position
with primary responsibilities to support ongoing avian long‐term monitoring
and applied ecology
studies to advance bird conservation. The Research Biologist will oversee
all aspects of a specific
program which consists of several distinct and always evolving research
projects. Job duties
include grant writing, partnership building, study design and project
management, data
management, statistical analyses, report and manuscript writing, community
and scientific
presentations, and field work as needed. Involvement in implementing field
studies will be a
component of this position and may include point count, area search,
spot‐mapping, nest
searching, mist‐netting and bird banding, and species-specific survey
protocols.

Job Duties (to include, but not limited to):
 Leads the development, design, and review of research studies
 Responsible for grant writing and contract acquisition
 Coordinates and manages field studies, including scheduling, data
collection, data entry,
data management, and program reporting
 Recruits and hires project leads, field technicians, and/or interns
 Provides for daily supervision, training, support, and coordination of
project leads, field
technicians, and/or interns
 Performs field work as needed and associated data entry
 Performs management and maintenance of field station housing, vehicles,
and equipment
as needed
 Performs data analysis for reports and manuscripts
 Writes project reports
 Produces manuscripts for publication in peer‐reviewed journals
 Ensures timely delivery of project deliverables within the program
 Markets science projects to partners and community
 Communicates bird conservation objectives and scientific findings to land
managers
 Contributes program-specific goals and objectives to annual planning
 Participates and holds leadership roles in local and regional professional
networks
 Presents research findings at scientific conferences
 Participates in community outreach activities
 Provides input on program budget to Science Director
 Provides support for accounting and billing at the program level

Basic Qualifications:
The Research Biologist must have a combination of education and experience
equivalent to a
Master’s degree in the Natural Sciences and an additional two years of
project management. The
applicant should have experience with avian monitoring techniques and
willingness to work as a
team member for a growing non‐profit organization. Qualifications include
supervisory
experience, excellent written and oral communication skills, data
management, statistical
analyses, report and manuscript writing, grant writing, and public
speaking. This position
requires good physical condition and the ability to work in the field
hiking over rough terrain in
inclement weather.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
 Experience and successful track record with grant writing and fundraising
 Experience with study design and multiple avian monitoring methodologies
(point count, area
search, spot‐mapping, nest searching, mist‐netting and bird banding, and
species-specific survey
protocols)
 Experience in personnel management and supervision of field crews
 Ability to develop, implement, track, and manage a budget for multiple
projects within a program
 Experience with current statistical methods and analysis of avian data
 Experience with distribution modelling using occurrence and abundance data
 Proficient with data management and analysis programs
(Access/Excel/R/PCord or Primer)
 Proficient with ArcGIS for study design and spatial analysis
 Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking
and technical science
writing and publication
 Good attention to detail and ability to multi‐task in a busy work
environment
 Must have good organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines
 Ability to work with others, both internally and externally
 Ability and positive attitude to work long days in the field beginning
before sunrise
 Ability and positive attitude to hike in rough and steep terrain in
inclement weather, in areas with
poison oak, ticks, biting and stinging insects, rattlesnakes, black bears,
and cougars
 Willingness to live in a remote area and/or camp on a regular basis
 Ability to drive on unmarked narrow forest roads
 Ability to represent KBO to partners and the public, and within
professional networks
 Knowledge of avian natural history and ecology
Must provide and maintain reliable transportation, a valid driver’s
license, and meet minimum
driving record and insurance requirements
