This position is located in the USFS, Washoe County Galena Creek Recreation
Area.  The Director is responsible for coordinating and implementing the
environmental education program for the Galena Creek Visitor Center
emphasizing the natural, cultural, and recreational resources and
opportunities of the Galena Creek Recreation Area.
The Director supervises Great Basin Institute at Galena environmental
education staff including Camp Coordinator, Environmental Educators, and
Counselors, and performs support services required for the operation of
school day and residential outdoor education field study programs and
Spring, Summer and Fall Break Camps.
As the only fully outdoor environmental science field study program in
Reno, our goal is to provide local youth with opportunities to experience
the outdoors in a safe, fun, nurturing and engaging setting, and to provide
academic, STEM education support to educators.
Description:
• Implement the Great Basin Institute at Galena’s Environmental Science
Field Studies Program comprising theme-based activities that capitalize on
the unique natural setting of Galena Creek Park and the Sierra Nevada
region. Themes include natural and cultural history topics that allow
children to experience the outdoors through discovery-based, STEM and
environmental education.
• Implement the Great Basin Institute at Galena’s Camps and School
Residential Field Studies to ensure the success and safety of these
programs. School Break Camps and Residential School Field Studies include
discovery-based science education, hikes, field trips, guest presenters,
and recreational activities. Staff and students/campers stay in the
beautiful WeChMe Lodge from Monday-Friday for four weeks of summer camp and
varying length of times for residential school field studies.

Compensation and Benefits:
• Annual Salary of $41,000.
• Benefits include: ACA compliant health, dental and vision insurance
provided at no cost to employee, optional 401(k) enrollment with employer
match, paid holidays, paid personal leave and sick time.
• Trainings provided include but are not limited to: 20-hour Camp Director
ACA Course; First aid; and CPR course.

Timeline: Begins as soon as the successful candidate is identified.

Additional Position Details:
• Directs operations for the GBN K-12 day and residential Outdoor Education
field study program and Spring, Summer and Fall Break Camps, including
supervising staff, preparing schedules, and maintaining and creating
curriculum.
• Assists Teen Science and Service Learning Camp Coordinator with
development and implementation of the teen program.
• Prepares and implements orientation and training for Naturalists.
• Maintains data consistent with reporting for grants and assists in
preparing reports.
• Works with the Visitor Center Director in preparing advertising materials
and promoting the programs.
• Maintains existing and develops new relationships with school teachers
and administrators;
• Develops and implements robust evaluations for student, teacher and
parent knowledge and feedback.
• Leads GBI school program team meetings.
• Assists and mentors GBI environmental educators/Naturalist in the
implementation and delivery of educational content.
• Assists in GBI fundraising events and grant writing efforts
• Assists on occasion with Visitor Center duties, per request of the
Director.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in education and/or the natural sciences;
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
• One year’s minimum experience in program management/coordination.
• Two years’ minimum experience working with K-12 students;
• Enthusiasm and commitment to youth outdoor education;
• Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments, and work in
all types of weather conditions.
• Ability to pass an FBI fingerprint check and National Sex Offender Public
Registry name search.
