Resource Associate (RA) will survey, document, assess, report, propagate,
collect, clean and prepare for storage, native plant seed for restoration
projects throughout southern Nevada and northeastern Arizona.  Work will
include surveying and accessing suitable native plant populations by
vehicle or on foot; identification of native and non-native plants; care
(including weeding and irrigation ) for native plant seed increase fields;
determination of seed ripeness and viability; determination of proper
harvest, collection, cleaning and storage methods; and proper documentation
of all accessions. The RA will perform all data management including GIS,
Access, and photo data for all collections and the seed storage facility.
The RA will also safely lead 5 to 10 member youth service groups and/or
volunteers on seed collection projects. The RA must be able to operate a
4-wheel-drive vehicle and pass a federal background check.

Other duties may consist of checking backcountry traffic counters, checking
weather stations, picking-up trash, rare plant plot monitoring, irrigation
setup and repair, plant propagation, weed removal, and other tasks
associated with native plant nursery operations.

Compensation and Timeline:
o Rate of Pay: $20.00/hour
o January/February 2016 – January/February 2017 or upon availability;
possibility of extension pending funding availability and positive
performance review.
o Full time, 40 hours per week including occasional holidays and weekends
(overtime may be required occasionally)

Location:
Lake Mead NRA (Boulder City, NV).  Lake Mead National Recreation area is
located in the Mojave Desert so RA will be required to wear appropriate
attire to work in an outdoor setting in extreme weather conditions and very
little shade.  Outside temperatures can range from below 32°F in the winter
to over 120° in the summer. RA may be exposed to poisonous or irritating
plants that may cause skin irritations and will work routinely with
chemical herbicides. RA may come in contact with spiders, lizards,
scorpions, insects, and other hazardous wildlife. RA will be required to
wear all necessary safety equipment to perform duties.  Work will occur in
remote areas on uneven terrain and various elevation gains. RA may be
exposed to direct sun, wind, dust, and rain and other environmental
conditions.

Physical Demands:
o Lift up to 40  pounds of material or equipment
o Bend, lift, pull, and push
o Crouch, stoop, kneel, stand, or bend for long periods of time
o Walk for long periods of time on uneven surfaces carrying equipment
o Be outside in extreme heat or cold (depending upon the season)
o Work 10 hour days
o Travel overnight or up to 8 days to complete project work

Qualifications:
o Bachelor’s degree in Botany or related field, desired but not required
o Ability to identify native and non-native plants of the desert southwest
o Knowledge of native plant seed physiology
o Knowledge of native plant seed harvesting, cleaning, and storage methods
o Experience with leading crews, youth and volunteers
o Ability to drive 4x4 vehicle, and navigate in the backcountry using maps
and GPS units
o Ability to use ArcGIS software such as ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcToolbox,
ArcMobile, and ArcPad
o Ability to use GPS units such as Garmins, Mesas, and Trimbles to collect
data
o Ability to use Microsoft Office Programs
o Ability to do physical labor in the backcountry
o Motivated to learn about the park’s resources
o Ability to communicate with park staff in an appropriate manner in
written and verbal form
o Must pass a federal background check
