Hourly Rate: Between $13.00 - $16.00 per hour depending on experience and 
training.

Two positions will be stationed in Grantsburg at Crex Meadows Wildlife Area and 
two will be stationed at the UW Kemp Natural Resources Station near Woodruff. 
Temporary housing, office space, and field vehicles will be provided. Each 
position will last approximately 10 weeks.
Duration: Job starts approximately March 21, 2016
Job Description: Upland Game Bird Research Technician: This position will be 
responsible for field and database support of two, multi-year upland game bird 
research projects aimed at documenting habitat occupancy and distribution of 
sharp-tailed grouse and wild turkeys. The researchers will collaborate with 
Wisconsin DNR Wildlife Management staff and University of Wisconsin-Madison 
(UW) partners to conduct daily road-side based auditory and visual surveys of 
sharp-tailed grouse and wild turkeys throughout northern Wisconsin. Two 
positions will be stationed in Grantsburg at Crex Meadows Wildlife Area and two 
will be stationed at the UW Kemp Natural Resources Station near Woodruff. 
Temporary housing, office space, and field vehicles will be provided. Each 
position will last approximately 10 weeks.

85% Goal A. Sharp-tailed grouse and wild turkey surveys
A1. Conduct early morning roadside-based occupancy surveys to document presence 
of birds.
A2. Visit each route 3-4 times during the survey season.
A3. Collect environmental information at each survey stop (e.g., temperature, 
wind speed, precipitation).
A4. Use GPS to mark locations of birds.
A5. Coordinate and schedule daily survey plan in adherence to protocols.
A6. Map habitat and vegetation at survey sites.
A7. Coordinate with volunteer citizen scientists to confirm bird observations.

15% Goal B. Manage upland game bird database
B1. Coordinate processing of field data.
B2. Enter field data into appropriate database.
B3. Maintain quality control assurances to preserve integrity of data.
B4. Manage and secure original hardcopy datasheets.
B5. Use Microsoft Excel and Google Drive for sharp-tailed grouse and wild 
turkey data management.

Knowledge Required:
Knowledgeable about wildlife ecology or natural resources
Ability to detect sharp-tailed grouse and wild turkeys by sight and sound
Good organizational skills.
Prior experience with bird surveys, particularly upland game birds, is useful.
Comfortable with reading maps, familiar with operating a GPS unit, navigating 
to GPS coordinates, and driving a field vehicle along remote, gravel/dirt, or 
two-track roads.
Willingness to work well with others, have a positive attitude, and possess 
strong verbal and written English Communication skills.
Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and the Internet.
