Faculty Position Announcement in the Department of Fish, Wildlife and
Conservation Ecology at New Mexico State University

Position: Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Applied Quantitative
Ecology, full-time, 12 month, approximately 70% research and 30% teaching.
Specialty: Applied Quantitative Ecology/Resource Management. We are
searching for an ecologist who uses contemporary statistical
approaches (e.g., Information Theory, Bayesian statistics, spatial
analysis) with modeling/programming skills for addressing applied
problems in wildlife ecology and resource management. Areas of
interest include, but are not limited to, population, community, or
landscape ecology. We welcome applicants working with any vertebrate
species and someone with the flexibility to develop quantitative
solutions to interdisciplinary problems and who is willing to
collaborate with scientists from other departments.
Qualifications: Applicant must have a Ph.D. in Biology, Wildlife
Science, Natural Resource Management, Zoology, Ecology, or related
field. Academic excellence proven by peer-refereed articles and
externally funded research are required. Applicant must have a strong
background in statistical and computational methods for addressing
applied problems in wildlife ecology and management, experience
working collaboratively with diverse research groups in
interdisciplinary research activities, and a willingness to include
new research in the southwestern U.S. as part of an overall research
program. Good communication skills with the ability to interact with
undergraduate, graduate students, public agencies, landowners,
agricultural interests, special interest groups, and other researchers.
Starting Date: August 2016
Responsibilities: Develop an externally funded research program,
advise and teach undergraduate and graduate students, and participate
in departmental, college and university committees. Teaching
responsibilities will include Ecological Biometry, Population
Ecology, and an additional course within the selected candidate's
area of expertise.
Department: There are 9 teaching/research faculty in the Department
of Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Ecology, including the U.S.
Geological Survey's New Mexico Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research
Unit. There are approximately 190 undergraduate majors and 30
graduate students in the Department. The Department has an M.S.
program, and there is opportunity to train students at the Ph.D.
level through a variety of graduate programs on campus. The
Department is currently in the process of developing an
interdepartmental Ph.D. program in Applied Ecology. Research programs
in the Department include conservation biology, landscape genetics,
fisheries and wildlife management, aquatic toxicology, fish
physiology, vertebrate ecology and management, aquatic ecology, and
landscape ecology.
