The Ecological Society of America is one of seven societies,
representing hundreds of thousands of scientists, who have sent a
letter to Lamar Smith (R-Tex), chair of the House Committee on
Science, Space and Technology, to decry his issuing of a subpoena for
scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and
demanded that they turn over internal e-mails related to their
research. Scientists are concerned that his campaign represents the
most serious threat Congress has posed to scientific freedom.
