Assistant Professor of Biology
Evolutionary/Plant Biologist
Austin College

The Austin College Biology Department invites applications for a tenure-track
position beginning Fall 2016. Ph.D. is required and previous undergraduate
teaching experience is highly desirable. Teaching duties will include two
courses per semester, both lecture and lab, plus January Term courses, the
latter usually in alternating years. The Department desires to identify a
broadly trained candidate with the ability to teach Evolutionary Biology and
Plant Biology. The successful candidate also will be expected to teach the
first course in the introductory series and occasional courses for non-science
majors. All tenure-track faculty also participate in the freshman seminar
program, teaching a course every four or five years.

In addition to a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, the successful
candidate is expected to develop an active research program involving
undergraduate students. The Biology Department has a long history of involving
undergraduates in field- and laboratory-based research. The department manages
five field study areas and Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge is nearby. Limited
intramural funding is available to support research activities, and there is a
program that provides summer research stipends for students involved in
research.

The Department recently moved into the IDEA Center - a new three-story science
facility including 16 classrooms, 32 advanced laboratory-classrooms, a 108-seat
auditorium, and an observatory. The IDEA Center houses the departments of
Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Computer Science & Mathematics, as well as
interdisciplinary programs in Environmental Studies and Public Health.
