DIRECTOR, VALENTINE EASTERN SIERRA RESERVE
The Natural Reserve System (NRS) at the University of California,
Santa Barbara (UCSB), invites applications for the position of
Reserve Director at Valentine Eastern Sierra Reserve (VESR) located
near Mammoth Lakes, California. VESR is comprised of two reserve
sites approximately 12 miles apart, the Sierra Nevada Aquatic
Research Laboratory (SNARL) and Valentine Camp. The facilities at
the sites include 200+ acres and 24 buildings, a major wet lab, a
system of experimental streams, scientific equipment,
state-of-the-art computer facilities and internet systems, vehicles,
andequipment. VESR is part of the UCSB NRS and operates within the
UCSB Office of Research and the University of California Natural
Reserve System. The Reserve Director lives on site in a residence
at SNARL. The responsibilities of the position are year-round,

The NRS mission is to support research, education and public
service, and contribute to the understanding and wise stewardship of
the Earth. The Reserve Director provides leadership of the two
remote Reserve sites that provide support for researchers,
university classes and outreach programs. The Director is
responsible for all aspects of the management of Reserve use;
administration including budget, purchasing, personnel and health
and safety; the operationand maintenance of facilities and
equipment; management of the Reserve's natural resources; and
interactions with agencies, the local community and the SNARL
lessor. Reserve users include over 1,500 participants in K-12 and
adult public education programs, and over 800 research and
University class users per year including up to 60 or more at one time.
The Reserve Director is responsible for programmatic and facilities
planning and implementation and, working with the UCSB Development
Office, leads a comprehensive private fundraising program for the
Reserves including cultivating and maintaining relationships with
the Valentine Reserve Fund members. The Director interacts
regularly with the VESR Faculty Advisor, the UCSB NRS Director and
the campus NRS Office on issues related to all aspects of Reserve
management. The Director may conduct independent scientific
research up to 15% time.
The successful candidate will be self-sufficient and have: an
advanced degree in environmental science or a related field and
experience with field research, excellent problem solving skills,
experience in project management, outstanding communication skills
and the ability to engage productively with diverse user groups and
stakeholders, excellent organizational skills, a willingness to
assume responsibility readily, and the ability to work effectively
with minimal supervision. Demonstrated experience in the following
areas is required: administration and budget management, staff
supervision, facilities and equipment operations and maintenance,
land stewardship and resource monitoring, acquisition of external
support and willingness to engage in private fundraising. Preferred
qualifications: experience with operations at a remote field
station, experience living in a rural community under winter
conditions, Ph.D. in an environmental science or similar, track
record of leading successful grant proposals, and skills in
information technology.
The Reserve Director resides and is present at the Reserve, near
Mammoth Lakes, except for brief intervals on VESR business, or on
authorized days off and vacation periods. This includes being on
call outside of normal business hours. Travel is required to UCSB
and University offices in Oakland several times per year. Employee
must be physically fit to perform snow removal and construction tasks.
