*Job Description:*

The Franklin & Marshall College Department of Earth and Environment invites applications for a Research Laboratory Manager and Technician. This person actively participates in technical support of the teaching and research programs of faculty and students, providing expertise in laboratory and field methods and in computing technology used in the geosciences, environmental sciences, and environmental studies. Primary duties are to manage the laboratory facilities and to train faculty and students in the use of varied types of instrumentation, sample preparation, and research methodologies. Facilities include a scanning electron microscope, inductively coupled plasma spectrometer, x­ray fluorescence unit, x­ray diffraction spectrometer, sedigraph particle size analyzer, Costech elemental analyzer, petrographic microscopes, RTK­GPS and other GPS equipment, geophysical instruments, and a GIS lab. The candidate must be skilled in analytical methodologies. The Research Laboratory Manager and Technician is responsible for quality control assurance and manages daily activities in the labs, including the operation of equipment and support of development of new analytical techniques related to ongoing research. He or she also would be responsible for basic maintenance of analytical laboratory equipment (in some cases in collaboration with outside vendors under maintenance contracts) and must demonstrate a willingness to be trained to work with new analytical equipment as it is acquired.The position requires familiarity with common laboratory health and safety protocols and responsibility for implementing College health and safety policies in the department laboratories. The successful candidate will join a productive department comprised of natural and social scientists working in a collegial interdisciplinary teaching and research environment.

*Requirements:*

Minimum qualifications include at least a Master of Science degree in geology, environmental science, chemistry, or closely related science; experience preferred. The successful candidate should be highly motivated and have excellent communication, organizational, and computer skills. Strong oral and written communication skills in English are essential. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The ability and willingness to provide excellent service and to work in a collegial manner with students, faculty and staff, and other constituencies is essential.

Because this position requires driving for College business, the successful candidate must possess a U.S. or Canadian driver's license which has been valid for at least two years, have a driving record that is free from excessive motor vehicle violations within the last three years, and have had no convictions in the last 24 months for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
