I am inviting applications for a graduate position (MSc) that includes support as a research assistant for Fall 2015 in the Biology Department at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. This position includes a research component aimed at assessing the population structure of the Black-spotted Newt (Notophthalmus meridionalis) using genetic markers and habitat surveys. Duties will include capture and documentation, as well as, lab work developing and using mitochondrial and nuclear DNA markers to analyze the newt population. Applicants must demonstrate an aptitude for research and ability to conduct fieldwork in hot weather conditions.
A Bachelor's degree in biology, ecology or a related field with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and GRE scores of: verbal 153 and quantitative 144 are required. Prior laboratory experience working with genetic markers, amphibian research and/or ecology is preferred. This assistantship has a stipend of $1200 per month, and includes tuition support.
