Summer Field Research Opportunities in Forest Ecology

We are seeking applicants for three biological science research technician
field positions (one position as crew leader) to examine understory
vegetation dynamics in the ponderosa pine forests of eastern Oregon. We
will resample experimental sites to examine the long-term responses of the
understory to repeated fall and spring prescribed burning and grazing. We
will measure the abundance and diversity of all vascular plants (including
grasses and sedges). The study area is located in the Blue Mountains on the
Malheur National Forest, about an hour north of Burns, Oregon. The project
is a joint collaboration between Oregon State University and the U.S. Forest
Service, Pacific Northwest Research Station. These positions are best
suited to current graduate students, or recent undergraduates who are
considering advanced study or professional work in plant ecology or forest
management. The nature of the work will require extended periods in the
field and short-distance hiking off trail. The positions will be based in
Corvallis, OR with travel to and from eastern Oregon via OSU Motor Pool
vehicles at the start and end of each sampling trip. The schedule will be
eight 10-hour days in the field, followed by six days off. Hotel housing in
Burns and per diem will be provided. Crew members are responsible for their
own housing and transportation during time off from work.

Specific duties include:
• Relocate permanent vegetation plots using GPS units and maps
• Measure understory plant cover and tree diameter and condition
• Identify plants to species using botanical keys and field guides including
vegetative identification of grasses and sedges
• Legibly record data and organize field sheets
• Assign (crew leader) or assist with day-to-day field logistics

Qualifications:
• Two years of college-level courses in forestry, botany, natural resources,
environmental science or closely related field and one year of related
experience; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Experience working in a team environment.
• Experience identifying herbaceous and woody plants.
• Experience working long hours in rugged terrain.
• Organized and self-motivated, attention to detail; legible handwriting.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with vegetation sampling and the use of taxonomic keys to
identify plants.
• Familiarity with the flora of the Interior Pacific Northwest.
• Skill in off-trail navigation using a topographic map and compass.

Salary: $13.15-$19.08/ hour, depending on experience
