The Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science, Inc. (CUAHSI) (www.cuahsi.org<http://www.cuahsi.org>) is seeking a Director for the Water Data Center (WDC), a facility that provides water researchers with state-of-the-art data publication, discovery, download, re-use, and archiving capabilities. The WDC is a flagship facility of CUAHSI, an independent non-profit corporation, and is supported by the National Science Foundation. Although designed to serve the hydroinformatics needs of the academic water community, the WDC's data suppliers and users include private and government entities throughout the U.S. and the world. The position is located in Medford, Massachusetts, near Boston.
The WDC is in its formative stage and the Director is expected to set both the strategic and tactical direction for the Water Data Center in consultation with the CUAHSI Board of Directors and community advisory committees. The successful candidate is expected to develop plans for future services of the WDC and to develop the funding strategy to achieve these services. The Director also interacts with the community to ensure that the WDC services are effective in advancing water science. This position is outward-looking as well, engaging other NSF-supported projects and facilities as well as representing the WDC in national and international standards organizations. The Director will be advised on informatics issues by a senior software engineer, but will be responsible for strategic decisions on technical approach, resource requirements, and prioritization of activities. The WDC Director reports to the Executive Director of CUAHSI, who provides budgetary oversight. The incumbent prepares reports for the National Science Foundation on the operations of the WDC and negotiates the cooperative agreement funding for the WDC with NSF in consultation with the Executive Director. The WDC Director is responsible for managing staff (currently 4.2 FTEs) to achieve the technical, educational, and outreach goals of the WDC. Responsibilities: * Evolve the vision for the Water Data Center. * Structure work plans and lead staff to deliver outstanding operational services and programs. * Maintain relationships with the Board of Directors, oversight committees, funders, and academic research community. * Represent CUAHSI in conferences, professional associations, and other public venues. * Develop and execute business plan for Water Data Center. Qualifications * An advanced degree in a water-science discipline with research experience. A PhD is desirable but candidates holding Masters Degrees with significant experience will be given full consideration. * Knowledge of geo-informatics, especially data publication and management * Personnel management experience * Knowledge of standards-based, services-oriented architecture is desirable CUAHSI was founded in 2001 by 33 universities and has since grown to over 130 members from the US and around the world. CUAHSI is recognized as a leader in the development of data standards and participates in the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), the Commission on Hydrology of the World Meteorological Organization (UN), and the international Global Earth Observing System of Systems (GEOSS).
