This position is available from September 1, 2014 to January 31, 2015, with the possibility of extension pending available funds. Research Technician, Plant Ecology Syracuse University: The Fridley and Frank Labs in the Biology Department at Syracuse University seek to hire a full-time field and lab assistant for Fall 2014 (approximately 20 weeks, September 2014 to January 2015, start and end dates flexible) for projects involving native and invasive forest plants in central New York, experimental old field communities in New York and New Jersey, and soils from Yellowstone National Park. Activities will involve lab and field components and include assisting with periodic field measurements of leaf traits; plant harvest and growth analysis; lab analysis of leaf elemental chemistry; maintenance and monitoring of experimental old field communities; processing plant and soil material for carbon / nitrogen analysis; and various other lab tasks including data entry. The successful applicant will be based largely in Syracuse, with (paid) trips to other NY and NJ locations. Desired qualifications include a strong interest in field ecology and complementary lab analyses, an undergraduate degree in Biology, Botany, Ecology, or related field, previous field/lab experience, and willingness to work outdoors under sometimes uncomfortable conditions. Demonstrated taxonomic proficiency with plants is preferred but not required. The pay rate is $12.45/hr and includes full benefits. There is a possibility the position would be extended further into 2015 pending funding availability.
