Assistant Professor (Weed Science)

Title: Assistant Professor nine-month academic appointment with opportunities 
for summer research support, joint appointment in the College of Agricultural 
Sciences and the College of Science at SIU Carbondale. Tenure home will be 
determined at time of hire by the expertise and interests of the selected 
individual, with an academic appointment in each college.

Date Available: August 16, 2014

Responsibilities: The successful candidate will lead a Weed Science program and 
bring synergy between the colleges and programs such as plant physiology, plant 
pathology and herbicide chemistry. The research, teaching and outreach 
assignments will align with the candidate's interests and academic background. 
The candidate will establish a competitively funded research program relevant 
to the area of weed and plant-related sciences and teach undergraduate and 
graduate courses. The position will also mentor graduate and undergraduate 
students, participate in and develop outreach programs, engage in curricular 
development, and perform departmental and university service. The candidate 
will also be expected to interact with weed scientists at other state 
universities, with departmental crop production agronomists, other pest 
management faculty, and with industry professionals. The successful candidate 
will have access to a wide range of resources and opportunities for 
collaboration within and among the departments and colleges.

Qualifications: An earned doctorate in weed science, agronomy, plant science, 
or a closely related field with an emphasis on weed management in production 
agriculture. Preference will be given to those candidates who demonstrate a 
strong connection between the colleges and focus on interdisciplinary research 
through excellence in weed and plant-related sciences. Demonstrated ability to 
communicate effectively within the crop production industry, and experience in 
conducting applied research to solve weed management challenges in the major 
grain crops of Illinois is preferred. Evidence of research excellence is 
required. The candidate should have the ability to develop and instruct 
undergraduate and graduate courses and the ability to develop a vibrant 
externally-funded research program.

Salary: Commensurate with experience
