ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

SUMMARY OF POSITION: The Department of Natural Resources and the Environment (NREN), a unit within the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture at the University of New Hampshire, invites applicants for a full-time (9 month) tenure track faculty position in Environmental Policy at the Assistant Professor rank. Preferred starting date is August 18, 2014.

The successful applicant will have a Ph.D. with an interdisciplinary background and training in the policy sciences, and a focus on the practical applications of policy tools to address natural resource and environmental issues. Primary affiliation within the department will be with the Environmental Conservation and Sustainability Program (ECS), although courses taught will serve other undergraduate programs within the department. The ECS Program is designed to engage students in a sustainability focus, fostering the integration of human dimensions of ecological systems. Candidates should be enthusiastic about working in an interdisciplinary setting that includes natural and social sciences.

The department offers seven BS programs: Environmental Conservation and Sustainability, Environmental Science, Community and Environmental Planning, Forestry, Tourism Planning and Development, Environmental and Resource Economics, and Wildlife and Conservation Biology. The department's M.S. in Natural Resources provides advanced education in areas parallel to the undergraduate degrees. In addition, department faculty participate in the interdisciplinary, university-wide doctoral program in Natural Resources and Earth System Science (NRESS). Our programs focus on preparing undergraduate students for careers in the applied natural and social sciences as well as for undertaking graduate work in research and professional programs. RESPONSIBILITIES: It is expected that the successful applicant will ultimately teach at least 3 courses. A primary teaching responsibility will be the undergraduate course in Environmental Policy, required of most of the department's majors. Additional policy courses at the graduate and undergraduate level will focus on other aspects of human dimensions of natural resources and environmental management. Faculty are expected to advise students in the department's undergraduate programs. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an independent and collaborative research program, involving undergraduate and graduate students, that meets the research needs of the state, the region and beyond, and to build departmental and interdisciplinary collaborations. The candidate will be expected and encouraged to develop a focus in the environmental policy science arena with emphasis in applied aspects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The candidate must have a Ph.D. with a focus in the environmental policy sciences. Knowledge of the legal aspects of policy is also desirable. Candidates with an interdisciplinary orientation around sustainable social-ecological systems, a regulatory focus, and applied research are particularly welcome. Experience in the international contexts of global environmental problems would be beneficial. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate excellence in both teaching and research.
