Primary Boat Captain for 64’9” Vessel, the RV Apalachee

The FSU Coastal and Marine Laboratory, St. Teresa, FL,

Qualifications include the following:

1.    Must have at least 100 Ton Captain's License and meet all US Coast
Guard standards for time at sea and drug testing.
2.    Bachelor's degree and two years of relevant work experience, or a high
school diploma/equivalent and six years of relevant work experience.
3.    Experience with field equipment use and maintenance.
4.    Proficient in computer applications, including Microsoft Excel and
Word or equivalent software.
5.    Attention to detail & able to multitask.
6.    Ability to work independently, be a self-starter, and have strong
critical thinking and communication skills.

Contracts and Grants

The position is funded by contract and grant monies.

Responsibilities

Primary duties of this position include operation, maintenance, and ensuring
certification of the FSUCML research vessel, a ship with capabilities of
long range and long term (6-7 days) operation at sea for scientific
expeditions. The boat captain is also responsible for the safety of all crew
& passengers aboard the vessel.

1.    At Sea: The Boat Captain is the primary authority for safe operation
and will split shifts with the assistant Boat Captain/1st Mate.
2.    In Port: The Boat Captain shall have oversight of all RV renovation,
maintenance, and equipment installations; ensure compliance with all
licensing requirements for all communications and safety for the vessel and
associated personnel; and promote RV operations to the broader scientific
community at the local, regional, and national level.
3.    The Boat Captain shall develop maintenance and renovation schedules,
budgets, and deliver seasonal and annual reports of all RV activities and
expenditures. The Boat Captain is expected to be in close communication with
the FSUCML Director or his/her designee in reference to any and all issues
that develop with boat operations while at sea or in port, including
equipment failures, weather delays, and personnel issues, and is expected to
seek approval for all related expenditures.
Pay Plan

This is an A&P (Administrative and Professional) position.

Salary Range

Anticipate hiring at about $45,000, depending on experience.
