Dear fellow ecologgers, I wanted to pass on an opportunity for those of you with creative works about insects!:
Art.Science.Gallery. (Austin, TX) is pleased to announce our open call for a juried group exhibition inspired by the field of entomology. Eclosion - the act of an adult insect emerging from its pupal case symbolizes Art.Science.Gallery.s transformation from a pop-up gallery to a brick-and-mortar venue. Following our successful Join Our Evolution crowd-funding campaign in spring 2013, we are on track to open this fall with ECLOSION as our opening exhibition. We are seeking artworks that address the role of insects in the natural and changing world, including aesthetic, cultural, economic, educational and scientific aspects of entomology. This exhibition is intended to enhance public understanding of insects, entomology, biodiversity and the importance of science and conservation. ECLOSION will coincide with two major science and art events in Austin, TX: (1) the 61st Annual Meeting of the Entomology- Entomological Society of America (Nov 10-13), which is expected to draw 3,000 entomologists and insect-enthusiasts to Austin and (2) the 2013 EAST Austin Studio Tour (Nov 16-17 + 23-24) which is an annual self-guided tour of East Austins studios, galleries and creative spaces attended by thousands of art-appreciating patrons. This exhibition will help fulfill Art.Science.Gallery.s missions of supporting emerging and established artist-scientists, engaging our community in the sciences through the visual arts, and providing a space for artists and scientists to forge new and collaborative relationships. Jurors for the exhibition include Dr. Mark Moffett, Dr. Walter Tschinkel, Dr. David Maddison, and Dr. Diane Ullman; brilliant entomologists who have also contributed creatively to their field. This exhibition will be co-curated by artist and entomologist Dr. Barrett Klein (University of Wisconsin La Crosse, www.pupating.org) and artist and ecologist Dr. Hayley Gillespie (Art.Science.Gallery.). Creative partners and sponsors for the exhibition include ARKive.org, the E. O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation and the Entomological Society of America! Art.Science.Gallery. specializes in exhibiting science-related artwork with a mission of engaging the public in the sciences through the visual arts. We consider science-art to be any work that combines art and the natural sciences through content, purpose, craft or materials. Thus, submissions may be in any medium. Group submissions by interdisciplinary collaborators and/or research groups are encouraged. As part of our mission is to encourage creative exploration by scientists, we encourage scientists to contact us for ideas if you would like to participate, but are not sure how. Applicants may submit up to 3 works for consideration. The due date for submissions is Sunday, September 22, 2013 at 11:59 pm CST and applicants will be notified of acceptance by Monday, September 30 at 11:59 pm CST. If your work is accepted you will be responsible for delivering your work(s) to the exhibition space between November 1-2, 2013 in Austin, TX. Works exhibited in this show that are not sold must be picked up (or have shipping arranged) by December 3, 2013.
