 WILDLIFE SPECIALIST III “Research Biologist" WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT DIVISION / 
RESEARCH BRANCH / PHOENIX BASED FLSA - EXEMPT SALARY GRADE 21 ($39,983-$71,563) 
ANNOUNCEMENT #4226 / CLOSING DATE: 08/21/2013 Descriptions of Duties: This 
position reports to the Terrestrial Research Program Manager within the 
Research Branch. Under minimal supervision, this position will supervise, 
coordinate and mentor staff of wildlife specialists and technicians engaged in 
complex wildlife studies across the state of Arizona. This position plans, 
organizes, evaluates, conducts, and oversees specialized fish and wildlife 
research activities using specialized methods, techniques and data processing 
procedures; assesses manpower, budget and equipment needs for research 
projects; provides logistic support to direct reports including management of 
equipment and allocation of resources; conducts field work including animal 
capture and monitors data collection, expenditures, budgets, work schedules, 
employee work performance and development, and project progress. Conducts 
analyses (e.g. statistical, spatial, multivariate, and quantitative) of 
collected information and develops technical reports and publications. This 
position interacts on a regular basis with internal and external customers and 
collaborators; provides expert advice to program and Department management, 
oversees and works with direct reports on data analyzes and report/manuscript 
preparation; reviews, edits, and prepares correspondence, documents, and 
publications; performs other duties as assigned. In-state and out-of-state 
travel as well as weekend and holiday work occasionally required. Knowledge, 
Skills, and Abilities: The candidate will have knowledge of/in: fundamental 
principles of plant and animal ecology, as well as their identifying 
characteristics, preferably in the southwestern US; advanced wildlife and 
habitat research techniques; wildlife management and conservation; critical 
thinking; employee supervision (including mentoring, evaluation, and 
discipline); budget planning and management; resource allocation; state and 
federal wildlife and environmental laws and regulations; preparation of 
successful funding proposals, interpersonal communication, and verbal and 
written communication. The ideal candidate will have knowledge/skill in: the 
development of study plans, project planning and management, and scientific 
methods including advanced methods of analysis (e.g., statistical, spatial, 
multivariate, and quantitative). The ideal candidate will have experience in 
wildlife capture and handling, and will have the ability to work independently 
and have survival skills necessary to work or camp in adverse, remote locations 
for extended periods.The candidate must have a Bachelor's degree in a wildlife 
science or a closely related field. An advanced degree is preferred. The 
preferred candidate will have at least three years of experience in wildlife 
research/management. A graduate degree in a wildlife science may substitute for 
one year of the required experience. Employment is contingent upon completion 
of a post-offer medical/physical examination and the agency’s ability to 
reasonably accommodate any restrictions. Position requires possession of and 
the ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license 
appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are 
subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving 
records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona
