Summer Marine Science Teaching Opportunity in Korea
Honam Sea Grant Program
Mokpo Maritime University
Mokpo, Korea; June 9th to July 12th, 2013
The Korean Honam Sea Grant Program at Mokpo
Maritime University (MMU) is launching a pilot
program wherein M.S. and Ph.D. candidates or
recent graduates of American Universities are
invited to apply for a five week teaching
fellowship involving one week of orientation and
four instructional weeks during the summer of
2013. The collaborative United States Korea Sea
Grant Junior Ocean Science Camp enables U.S.
scientists in a Masters Degree program or higher
the opportunity to impart their knowledge to
Korean students in classroom and outdoor field
settings with support from Honam Sea Grant personnel.
Junior Ocean Science Camp instructors will
provide classroom instruction and lead English
language field tours imparting basic concepts of
marine and estuarine ecology, and the biology of
fish and invertebrates in Korea. Target audiences
are elementary school age students in Grades 4-6,
and Sea Grant staff. Instructors will be
responsible for teaching two one-hour sessions
four days/week and weekly ½ day field tours. The
Junior Ocean Science Camp serves a dual purpose
of providing English language exposure and marine
science education to young students and Sea Grant staff.
Qualifications include good oral and written
communications skills, knowledge of marine
science, fisheries biology, and estuarine
ecology, and demonstrated teaching ability.
Interest in sailing and ability to teach small
boat handling is highly desirable. Applicants
must provide a current CV, cover letter
describing interests, unofficial transcripts,
health insurance, passport copy, and names of
three references. These materials should be
submitted electronically to Ms. Nicole Seo,
