Let me add some information to this announcement. The description "Ocean Science and Engineering" may discourage ecologists who view themselves neither as ocean scientists nor engineers (and what is an ocean scientist, anyway?). In fact, WHOI is organized into 5 departments:

Biology
Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry
Geology and Geophysics
Physical Oceanography
Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering

and a Marine Policy Center.

Almost everything that is done in the Biology Department could be classified as ecological in one way or another (biochemical, physiological, behavioral, population, community, ecosystem, etc.). There is also a very strong contingent of microbial biogeochemists in the both Biology and Marine Chemistry departments. There is, obviously, a strong environmental component not only to the research of folks in the departments, but also in the Marine Policy Center.

As David notes, previous experience not required. Check it out.

Several Postdoctoral Awards in Ocean Science and Engineering are available from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. It should be noted that the Institution is "as interested in receiving applications from persons with non-oceanographic backgrounds as those specifically trained in the marine sciences and in ocean engineering."

Application forms and additional information can be found at http://www.whoi.edu/postdoctoral. The deadline is January 5, 2013.
