ANNOUNCEMENT OF FACULTY VACANCY

27 November 2012

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
WILDLIFE HABITAT ECOLOGIST

The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and
Forestry (SUNY-ESF) in Syracuse invites applications for an academic-year,
tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Wildlife Habitat Ecology.
We seek a scientist focused on maintaining functional wildlife habitat
both within the northeastern United States, where wildlife habitats are
undergoing rapid change associated with land use, invasive species and
climate, as well as elsewhere around the globe.

Responsibilities: The successful candidate is expected to develop an
extramurally funded and internationally recognized research program
complemented by a teaching program that includes an introductory
undergraduate course in Wildlife Ecology and Management and new
undergraduate or graduate courses/seminars within their area of expertise
such as habitat ecology, nutritional or foraging ecology, adaptive habitat
management, or other habitat-related topic. Professional service to
groups such as state and federal agencies, non-governmental organizations,
professional societies and the public is also expected, as is significant
interaction with colleagues and students in wildlife and other disciplines
at the College and broader academic community.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Wildlife Ecology or similar discipline is
required, with a primary and demonstrated research interest in the ecology
and management of wildlife habitat that includes game species.
Demonstrated experience collaborating with state and federal agencies is
also required. Knowledge of the nutritional and physiological needs of
wildlife, quantitative skills in population and habitat analysis, strong
field-oriented research and teaching experience, post-doctoral research
experience, involvement with The Wildlife Society, and an ability and
interest in mentoring graduate and undergraduate students in research are
desired. Preference will be given to candidates having a record of
excellence in research, teaching, and service commensurate with time since
degree.

The College and Department: The College of Environmental Science and
Forestry, a specialized school within the SUNY system, is a
Carnegie “Doctoral Research University Intensive” Institution. With a
total enrollment of about 1,700 undergraduates and 600 graduate students,
ESF provides an intimate small-college atmosphere while hosting one of the
nation’s largest programs in wildlife, fisheries and conservation
biology. The Wildlife Science undergraduate major and graduate
concentration in Fish and Wildlife Biology and Management are housed
within the Department of Environmental and Forest Biology
(www.esf.edu/efb/), as is the historic Roosevelt Wild Life Station
(www.rooseveltstation.org). The Department encourages integration of
teaching and research, as well as field-intensive courses, and advanced
undergraduates regularly work with graduate students and faculty on
research.

With its many field stations, ESF ranks among the largest college campuses
on earth. ESF’s forest properties close to Syracuse and within the
Adirondack Park provide rich opportunities for teaching and research in
wildlife habitat ecology. The main campus is also adjacent to Syracuse
University and Upstate Medical University, giving students and faculty the
added resources of large institutions of higher education including a wide
array of courses, computer and library facilities, sports and health
services, and cultural resources.
