For graduate students interested in establishing collaborations with Chinese researchers--- I found the NSF East Asia & Pacific Summer Institute (EAPSI) to be an excellent way to get started working in China. The 8 weeks I spent there has had a profound influence on my research and I have continued relationships with my colleagues there.
I'd be happy to email directly with anyone who might be interested in pursuing this unique (and relatively poorly known) program. With that said, it is just as hard, if not harder, to establish an international research program in China than it would be in any other foreign country, so ... just keep that in mind if you do apply... be realistic with your research timeline. -Ginger Allington, Ph.D. Saint Louis University [email protected]
