I am recruiting new graduate students for the Urban and Landscape Ecology Lab (Dr. John Withey) for Fall 2013 in the Department of Biological Sciences at Florida International University (FIU). M.S. or Ph.D. students interested in urban ecology, avian ecology, conservation biology and/or tropical ecology can look at my website http://jwithey.weebly.com/ for a description of my current and previous research. This fall I will begin field studies of urban bird communities that use hardwood hammock fragments in South Florida and will be especially interested to discuss aspects of this research with potential students. I also expect to continue regional to continental-scale modeling work focused on the response of vertebrates to land-use and climate change.
The FIU application is due January 15 and more information about the Biology Graduate Program can be found at http://biology.fiu.edu/academics/graduate- programs/. Biological Sciences at FIU offers TA fellowships to qualified candidates for up to 4 years, there is a competitive FIU Presidential Fellowship you can apply for that provides NSF-level support, and I expect and support my Ph.D. students to seek external funding as well (NSF grad fellowships, EPA STAR, etc.). Ours is a research-intensive academic unit with an emphasis on educating broadly-trained life scientists. Ecology is a particular strength of the Department with over a dozen faculty active in ecological research, with close ties to both the Florida Coastal Everglades LTER and the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. I will be in Portland all week at the ESA conference this year (Aug 5-10) so it may be convenient to meet with potential students there. Email me ([email protected]) a brief message with your research interests, long-term goals, and a cv with education, research experience, and relevant skills/abilities. John C. Withey | Assistant Professor Department of Biological Sciences | FIU Miami, FL 305-348-4483
