Hello, all:

I am asking this question for a friend. He wishes to establish a dive site
operation in an old limestone quarry near Joliet, IL. The quarry has not
been in operation since at least the 1970's (and the site was a beach club
in the 80s). It is about 30 acres and 40 feet deep. His two major concerns
are water temperature and visibility (both from phytoplankton and bottom
sediment, primarily disturbance of the latter).

Are there practical (and ecologically friendly) ways of mixing the water
(rather than heating it) and eliminate the stratification. I thought that it
might be possible to aerate the lake and create an upwelling, rather than
pumping water. Would introducing phytoplanktivorus fish significantly help
with the clarity? Would removing bottom sediment down to the rock bottom be
practical?

Any suggestions you have would be welcome.

TIA
