LECTURER

Position Description:  Full time, 9-month, non tenure track biologist.
Appointment date: August 2012.

Responsibilities: This position will require a dynamic educator to work
closely with undergraduate students in virtual and face-to-face settings.
Responsibilities will be 70% teaching, 20% service, and 10% scholarship.
Teaching responsibilities will include coordination of online non-majors
biology labs and teaching General Education courses such as Human Biology
and Humans and the Environment, and Introductory Biology labs for majors. A
typical teaching load includes 12 credit hours and 15 + contact hours per
semester. In addition, the applicant will be expected to lead departmental
recruitment and retention efforts, coordinate visits with prospective
students, develop and maintain an on-line strategy marketing our programs
and faculty activities, and contribute service to the Department. 

Required Qualifications: Masters degree in biology or an appropriate
subdiscipline. Preferred Qualifications: The ideal applicant would have
experience in recruitment and retention programs for the sciences. 

Applicants should provide evidence of teaching experience and recruitment,
for example, program development and teaching evaluations. Other necessary
qualifications include strong communication skills, a commitment to
excellence in teaching and advising, and active participation with students.

The final candidate will have consented to and successfully completed a

The Department of Biological Sciences has 12 full-time faculty positions
representing the disciplines of botany, ecology, physiology, evolutionary
biology, microbiology, anatomy, and vertebrate zoology. The Department
offers B.S. degrees in 12 concentration areas, a General Science program for
pre-health professional and environmental science students, and advises
thesis and non-thesis M.S. degrees in biology. A minimum of seven GTAs
assist with teaching undergraduate labs; an additional six graduate
assistantships are available through the Sternberg Museum of Natural History
and the Kansas Wetlands Education Center. The Department is housed in the
recently renovated Albertson Hall, which includes fully mediated classrooms
and laboratories. The Department employs a full-time lab coordinator and
office manager, and a half-time greenhouse manager.

Fort Hays State University is a state-supported liberal and applied arts
institution governed by the Kansas Board of Regents. It primarily serves the
western one-half of Kansas. Approximately 13,000 students are enrolled in
four colleges (Arts and Sciences, Business and Leadership, Education and
Technology, and Health and Life Sciences) and a Graduate School, which have
a combined total of 340 full-time faculty members. The campus is modern,
spacious (4,160 acres), attractive, and has outstanding museums, galleries,
and cultural and recreational facilities. A unit of the AAUP represents the
faculty through a formal negotiated labor agreement. Kansas State
University’s Agricultural Research Center at Hays is adjacent to the campus.

Hays, Kansas is a city of approximately 20,000 located roughly midway
between Kansas City and Denver on I-70. It is a regional center serving the
cultural, health, educational, business, service, and transportation needs
of much of western Kansas. Medical and educational facilities are superior.
Manufacturing, medical, education, retail, farming, ranching, and oil
comprise a large part of the local economy. Hays offers excellent K-12
schools, has a friendly community, and continues to develop a growing
downtown business district.
