Interpretive Specialist Spend 12-weeks in central Nevada working at the California National Historic Trail Interpretive Center in Elko developing interpretive programs surrounding the California Trail experience and its related themes for the general public. The position will contribute to the appreciation and preservation of historic and cultural sites and work to forge strong community partnerships and enhance sustainable tourism in the region. This is a great opportunity to gain experience in the field of interpretation by helping to establish programs and implement the exhibit plan.
Compensation: This is an AmeriCorps position, and candidates will receive a living stipend of $3,500 for the 12-week period. This is not an hourly wage or a salary and is paid to members bi-weekly throughout the 12-week period. Upon completion of AmeriCorps service, members shall receive an additional education award in the amount of $1,468 that can be used for paying off student loans, or paying tuition for a Title IV accredited college. Timeline: June 4, 2012 (or upon availability); 12-week position with possible extension pending funding and favorable performance review. Description: Assist with event planning and day to day operations of the California Trail Interpretive Center. Work includes presenting formal and informal interpretative programs, costumed interpretation both in third and first person, environmental and historic curriculum based education programs, retail sales in the Trail Center book store and assistance with exhibit and grounds maintenance. Assist with graphic design, development of brochures, site bulletins, standard operating procedures, and volunteer coordination. Training: Trail Center staff will provide supervision and interpretive training. Safety, CPR, and First Aid training is mandatory. Training will be provided on the BLM mission and procedures. The opportunity will be available to learn budgeting and procurement. This is a great opportunity to gain experience in all aspects of interpretive center operations starting from the ground up. Equipment: The Trail Center will provide work space, Internet access, period costumes, and props; the Trail Center also has a small resource library on-site. Skills/Qualifications: Knowledge of, or interest in American history, Native American history and culture, historic research, and pioneer skills and crafts. Must be a skilled communicator both orally and in writing with a knowledge of, or interest in learning, interpretive techniques. Knowledge of graphic design and social media is helpful. Must enjoy working with children and adults. A Background check is required for this position.
