Overview
The National Ecological Observatory Network, Inc. (NEON™) is a $430 million
dollar observatory project dedicated to understanding how changes in
climate, land use and invasive species impact ecology. For the next three
decades NEON will collect a comprehensive range of ecological data on a
continental scale across 20 eco-climatic domains representing US ecosystems.
NEON will use cutting edge technology including an airborne observation
platform that will capture images of regional landscapes and vegetation;
mobile, relocatable, and fixed data collection sites with automated ground
sensors to monitor soil and atmosphere; and trained field crews who will
observe and sample populations of diverse organisms and collect soil and
water data. A leading edge cyberinfrastructure will calibrate, store and
publish this information. The Observatory will grow to 300+ personnel and
will be the first of its kind designed to detect and enable forecasting of
ecological change at continental scales.

Summary
This is an entry level position in which the employee is trained to provide
skilled technical assistance to scientists in the execution of biological
observing programs and basic analysis of data. The incumbent monitors the
assigned equipment and processes and assists science staff and technicians
in design, development, testing and evaluation of field and laboratory
protocols. The Science Technician assists with seasonal and/or periodic
sampling activities and related laboratory activities, and is responsible
for instruments and sampling activities at terrestrial field sites. This
position reports to the Assistant Director for Terrestrial Sciences.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Developing and prototyping of protocols and laboratory analytical
procedures
• Designing, developing, testing, evaluating and constructing field
sampling equipment and field sampling set ups
• Diagnosing and developing solutions to logistical and mechanical
challenges associated with field sampling efforts
• Supporting the terrestrial science team in preparation for reviews
and construction efforts, including literature searches, summary reports,
and data analyses
• Ordering and organizing equipment and supplies

Required Experience
• 1 year of work experience in field ecology or comparable activity.

Preferred Experience
• Experience managing field sampling and sample processing, storing
and shipping of a variety of biological samples and sentinel species –
birds, small mammals, ground beetles, plants, and, microbes
• Experience implementing field analytical protocols
• Experience with diverse field sampling equipment

Skills and Abilities
• Ability to work as productive member of an active Science team
• Good problem solving skills
• Mechanical abilities and attention to details
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to quickly learn and carry out assigned tasks

Physical Abilities
• The candidate may be exposed to conditions in the field, and
therefore must be able to traverse uneven ground such as dirt banks, stream
beds, and shallow ponds carrying equipment and materials up to 40 lbs.
