Dear Ecolog, Pre-publication peer review is essential for the progress of science. But how rigorous should peer-review filters be? They can range from zero, i.e. publish without peer review, to the highest level where publication is granted for 'only the best of the best', as judged by peer review. Is the current practice optimal for the dissemination of discovery in ecology and evolution? A simple optimality model can be used to generate needed conversation for these important questions.
