I am a Peace Corps volunteer in the rural Andean village of Ulcumayo, Department of Junin, Peru. I am a community based environmental management volunteer currently working to improve environmental education, tourism, environmental and trash management with current projects involving reforestation, environmental education, and recycling implementation.
I will be a volunteer here until approximately December 2013. I am also interested in doing a research project to better understand a little studied region. Here is some information on my region; The district of Ulcumayo ranges from 4,800 msl to 1,200 msl, with the City of Ulcumayo approximately at 3,500 msl. The region consists of 75% mountainous and 25% consists of the ecotone between mountain and high central rain forest. The region consists of 43% agricultural, 42% pastoral, and 15% protected land. The primary economic activity is the production of potatoes supplemented by other native and introduced crops. The rural population of 95% casteano and 5% quechua speakers is steadily decreasing with the decrease in potato price and increase in price of consumer goods. The population density is 6 hab/ km2. More information is available if needed. Please let me know if you are interested, Grant Adams
