I am not sure what kind of responses you have gotten but I would
highly recommend Frank Harrell's book.

Harrell, F. E. 2001. Regression modeling strategies: with applications
to linear models, logistic regression, and survival analysis.
Springer.

The examples are mostly from the medical literature but I have found
it extremely useful.
