The Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science, Inc (CUAHSI) is a non-profit university consortium funded by the National Science Foundation to advance water research. The communication and public outreach specialist position supports communicating our services and activities directly to our membership, the university water science community. Additionally, the position is responsible for developing outreach materials and activities that help our community communicate water science concepts and research to the general public. Major Duties and Responsibilities The Communication and Public Outreach Specialist will: •Develop and implement a sustained membership communication strategy using both traditional communication (webpage, newsletters, press releases, etc.) and social media tools, working with science staff to remain aware of new and ongoing activities and accomplishments. •Create content for and maintain the CUAHSI newsletter and webpage. •Directly support outreach aspects of CUAHSI's other programmatic activities and services. •Help our members communicate their science to the public. •Represent CUAHSI at professional meetings and outreach events. •Assist in developing and executing new outreach materials and projects. Knowledge and Skills Required by the Position The ideal candidate for this position will have both excellent communications skills and a background or experience in water science. A candidate with a Bachelors or Masters degree in a water science related discipline or in communications will be considered with appropriate complementary experience. Previous work in science communication or outreach is highly desirable.
The incumbent must be able to work independently with minimal supervision. Excellent written and oral communications skills are required. The incumbent must feel comfortable taking technical and science documents from the science staff and developing materials that communicate salient points to a non-technical audience. The ideal candidate has an outgoing, engaging personality, and will effectively represent CUAHSI and discuss CUAHSI science services at various meetings and events. General computer skills are required. Experience with Microsoft Office, Access, and Adobe products is highly desirable. Experience in website maintenance with a content management system such as Word Press is preferred. Nature of Position The incumbent will be an employee of the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science, Inc. The incumbent reports to the Senior Program Manager, and works directly with science staff. The location for this position is at the CUAHSI office in Medford, MA (near Boston). Some travel (10%) to attend meetings and workshops and represent CUAHSI at exhibitions and meetings will be required. CUAHSI is a non-profit university consortium with 135 members and affiliate members from 47 states and 6 countries. CUAHSI receives funding from the National Science Foundation to develop and administer research support services to the academic community.
