BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE TECHNICIAN (GG-05) We are seeking 2 highly-motivated ornithologists ($15.00/hour plus $18 field per diem) to perform avian point counts in isolated and scenic areas of Utah, Nevada, Oregon, Idaho and northeastern California. This work is part of the SAGESTEP project, a large-scale experimental study investigating the response of avian communities to woodland invasions in sagebrush ecosystems. Sampling protocol consists of variable distance point counts and data entry. We will be collecting data on the entire suite of species with focal species including gray flycatcher, dusky flycatcher, sage thrasher, sage sparrow, vesper sparrow, Brewer's sparrow, black-throated sparrow, and green-tailed towhee. Applicants should know or be able to quickly learn western bird species by sight and sound. Last season we detected over 150 species. Vegetation sampling will follow bird survey efforts at a subset of surveyed point count locations. Preference will be given to energetic, detail-oriented candidates with experience in songbird point-count surveys. Experience creating and manipulating Microsoft Excel documents and using GIS/GPS for navigation purposes is highly desirable. This is a physically demanding job, involving hiking and camping in rugged terrain for 8 to 10 days and extended hours in the field during some periods of this research. Remote field conditions include exposure to wind, dust, heat, cold, and intense sun at elevations exceeding 5,000 feet. These GG-05 positions are full-time, temporary employment, stationed in Elko, NV. The position start date is April 23rd and will extend to August 9th, with possible extension based on crew availability and site phenology.
