Confluence is a seminar series at Florida International University (FIU) run by the QBIC (Quantifying Biology In the Classroom) Program where we introduce different professionals in the field of science to our undergraduate biology majors. Scientists firstly give a seminar on their work and how their own life experience led them to the kind of science they do. Secondly, they give a sit-down interview where they elaborate on the personal and scientific themes. The Confluence seminar series is predicated on our local reality that many students are unaware of the opportunities available in different branches of science, or the various ways in which science influences our society, especially in areas of research. The series thus aims to expose students to the people in the field who do research, science writing etc., and the personal experiences that led them to choose this particular avenue. The series is also part of the science education initiatives that the QBIC program has been promoting in the Department of Biology at FIU.
The sit-down interview is recorded and broadcast on the program's website. The following link is Episode I, an interview with Dr. Tyrone Hayes of University of California, Berkeley.
