The Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) is seeking a
six-month Tropical Forestry intern to start on or around February 1,
2012. The successful applicant will work closely with Drs. Jonathan
Thompson and Lisa Korte assisting with research into forests and
forestry in the central African country of Gabon. Despite the topic
of the research, the intern will be based solely in Virginia. The
intern will: (1) construct a comprehensive annotated bibliography
and ArcMap GeoDatabase regarding forest ecology and forestry in
Gabon (2) assist with the translation of Gabonese forestry records
from French to English (3) create a non-spatial database summarizing
the forestry records (4) assist with preliminary analyses of the
forestry data and (5) help with general tasks at SCBI.
Preference will be given to applicants that speak French, have
experience summarizing scientific literature, using GIS software,
and have a demonstrated interest in tropical forestry and land
use. The ideal candidate will be considering a graduate program in
tropical forest ecology or a related field.
The internship includes a stipend ($1000/month) and dorm-style
housing with other SCBI Interns.

SCBI is a rural campus located at the north entrance of the
Shenandoah National Park about 60 miles west of Washington, D.C., in
