Two graduate assistantships are available to study the microbial biogeography of large rivers in the Mississippi River Basin. The aim of the project is to examine spatial and temporal patterns in microbial community diversity and physiological potential within this large river system. The research will involve field sampling on five large rivers, and molecular analyses of community diversity. Ideal candidates will have basic experience in aquatic ecology and microbiology, however comprehensive training in all techniques will be provided. Positions are available starting January 2012, with the potential to delay until summer 2012 if needed. Assistantships include a stipend, and cover tuition and health insurance.
