A research technician position is currently available with the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management (NREM), College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR), University of Hawaii at Manoa. The minimum salary for this position is $3,057/month. The position will be based in Hilo, Hawaii, and is associated with a Forest Service-funded long-term study that will use modeling and field observations to examine how climate change, invasive species, and the interactions of these stressors impact the hydrological and ecological function of Hawaiian streams. The position will involve the following duties and responsibilities: 1) assisting in research activities that analyze the impacts of climate change and invasive species on watershed hydrology and their consequences for stream flow and aquatic ecosystems; 2) assisting with the development, construction and deployment of field equipment for monitoring/measuring parameters related to climate, watershed hydrology, stream flow and/or ecological responses; 3) assisting with the development of protocols for implementation of experimental field treatments; 4) performing a variety of routine field sample and data collection activities, and laboratory tests and procedures according to prescribed protocols and schedules; 5) using scientific instruments, equipment, and/or supplies in the conduct of routine research activities; 6) collecting and entering data into the computer and verifying data; 7) assisting in analyzing data and recording observations and measurements; (9) assisting in the preparation of applications and reports to maintain compliance for access to state conservation lands; and 10) performing other related research support duties as required.
The minimum qualifications for this position include: 1) possession of a baccalaureate degree in Invertebrate Zoology, Environmental Science, Ecology, Earth System Science, or related field and 1 year of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for research science; or equivalent education/training or experience; 2) experience in watershed-based research with emphasis on the hydrology and ecology of stream habitats; 3) functional knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of stream ecology demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts and terminology to test hypotheses;4) Demonstrated ability to conduct research in field conditions, including the need to navigate through forest, traverse steep terrain and/or rugged, slippery slopes; 5) demonstrated organizational skills and ability to work with minimal supervision; 6) demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range of problems that may occur in watershed research; 7) demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations; 8) demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals, and 9) demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing and database management software.
