Does anyone have any recommendations for two-way radios that work in thick,
Amazonian, tropical forest? I’m looking for radios that just communicate
between each other, i.e. not by way of a central tower or with marine
frequencies, etc. I have had success with larger hand-helds than small ones,
such as the Motorola Talkabout, although the larger model still didn’t reach
much beyond 500m. Although the larger radios worked better, I don’t
understand why (more watts? larger antenna?). If you have any pointers or
recommendations about brands, features, or number of watts, I would really
appreciate it. Being a novice in this realm, I also don’t understand the
difference between VHF and UHF. We will be using the radios between research
teams in the lowland tropical forests of Peru, so I’d like to get something
that will reach as far as possible.

Thanks!
