The United States Geological Survey seeks a volunteer field assistant to aid
in the establishment of long-term monitoring plots in forests across
Northern California and Southern Oregon. This project is expected to start
late June/early July and last through September. The crew will be based in
Arcata, CA and travel to field sites in Crater Lakes N.P., Cascade-Siskiyou
N.M., Oregon Caves N.M., and Lassen Volcanic N.P. The work schedule will
likely consist of 8 days (10 hrs/day) in the field, followed by 6 days off.
While performing fieldwork, the crew should expect to camp overnight and
hike in remote natural areas.

The ideal candidate will have an interest in forest ecology and climate
change science, and possess knowledge of or a willingness to learn forest
sampling and surveying techniques. The ability to remain positive and
enthusiastic while performing repetitive tasks, for long hours, over
challenging terrain, even in oppressive heat and seemingly impenetrable
clouds of biting insects is a MUST.

This is an excellent opportunity for a student or recent graduate to obtain
valuable experience in the field and to network professionally. Travel
expenses to field sites will be covered and the possibility for park housing
exists. It should be an exciting and fun season, so if you would like to
join us please send a brief cover letter and resume with contacts for
references to Jon Hollis at [email protected].
