Job Description: Teton Science Schools is developing habitat models that predict pika occupancy in the southern Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. The AmeriCorps Pika Field Assistant will support the pika research team throughout the Bridger-Teton National Forest in western Wyoming. Specific duties include detecting American pika presence through direct and indirect sign, conducting vegetation transects, deploying temperature loggers (iButtons), and entering and managing data in Excel and GIS. Overnight trips (backcountry and frontcountry) are required, in addition to a willingness to hike long distances (15-20 miles) on and off trail in rugged, remote terrain. Applicants with backcountry skills, experience with plant identification, and possess/working towards a degree in Botany, Wildlife Ecology, or Ecology are encouraged to apply. Through this internship the AmeriCorps member will: * Increase scientific literacy by working directly with an active research team, educating others about alpine ecology in the face of global climate change, and gain a better understanding of how science informs conservation and management. * Work with AmeriCorps members from other parts of Teton Science Schools to plan, implement, and evaluate a service project with a non-profit or government organization in Jackson Hole. * Create a portfolio that demonstrates the understandings, skills, and experiences gained through the AmeriCorps program. Qualifications: * At least 21 years of age * US citizen * Willingness to long hours during untraditional work weeks * Enjoy working both independently and cooperatively as part of a team * Valid driver's license with no DUIs or DWIs in the last five years , no more than two moving violations in the last three years * Valid certification in First Aid, AED, adult and child CPR through the end of the internship.
