La MICA Biological Station El Copé, Coclé, Republic of Panama http://www.lamica.org Hello Amigos – The first three months of 2011 have been very busy at La MICA Biological Station! Recent News Visitors La MICA Biological Station celebrated our first anniversary at the beginning of the year. We continue to welcome guests and enjoyed the stays of all of our visitors. Thank you to everyone involved in the RIO Program and University of New Mexico Introduction to Tropical Biology for spending time at La MICA! Recent Land Acquisition Thanks to a number of Amigos, La MICA was able to secure a piece of land on the Atlantic side of Omar Torrijos National Park. A local copper and gold strip mine could have purchased this land, but we were able to purchase it to preserve it for conservation and research. We hope to continue such efforts and appreciate the donations that made this possible. We are considering a time-share type of program in order to construct a couple of cabins there. Stay tuned or contact Julie at [email protected] for more information or to offer suggestions. RIO Program Our Research and Inventory Opportunities Programs allows students and recent graduates to visit La MICA for a reduced cost. The program is growing in popularity and provides a great experience in tropical forest research and amazing interactions with local communities. Email Julie at [email protected] to receive an informational brochure or a flyer to hang up at your school. New Names La MICA is proud to announce that Sophia and Grace Gamble, two young girls from Chippewa Falls, WI, named our dining area the Blue Morpho Lounge. The girls graciously gathered their savings from their piggy banks to donate to La MICA and won the chance to name one of our structures. Thanks to our young conservationists! We appreciate your support! Website Our website currently is being updated. Please excuse our construction! Help La MICA $11 for Conservation in 2011 Now that La MICA can accept visitors, we hope to reduce our fundraising events held across the year. This year we have launched $11 for Conservation in 2011. We are encouraging each of our amigos to simply donate $11. This seems like a small amount, but we understand everyone is affected by the economy and may be donating to help other great causes. Remember that the dollar goes a long way in Panama and if each Amigo donates this small amount, we will achieve great things! Please log-on today to http://www.lamica.org/payment.html or http://ihcenter.org/groups/lamica to do your part. You also can send a check: Make checks to: IHCenter/Amigos Support La MICA Send checks to: Amigos Support La MICA; c/o Julie Ray; 12458 132nd Street; Chippewa Falls, WI 54729 Each person will receive his or her name on the $11 for Conservation in 2011 plaque at La MICA. Please encourage family and friends to help out! Lets prove that we can help conservation and humanity with just a simple and small donation by each paying it forward! Remember, our organization, Amigos Support La MICA is a member of the International Humanities Center, a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Larger donations can be made through the second link and are tax deductible. Help La MICA when you order on Amazon.com (it’s free!)
