I am primarily an ecologist but have recently completed a behavioral project on the annual activity budget of argali (Ovis ammon). I used instantaneous scan sampling, a minimum of 7 days a month for 1 year. Argali move in bands of various sizes and so the number of observed behaviors is quite different from day to day depending upon the sizes of the groups that were followed. Frequency (proportion of all behaviors) of a particular behavior seems the most obvious way to view the activity budget and the way it changes over the year. I want to compare different periods of the year (determined by phenology and breeding) for changes in relative proportions of behaviors, but I am unsure of the best nonparametric test to use. Although this is an ecologists' list, since I am primarily an ecologist and use this list often, I thought I would try your expertise and experience first. Thanks for any help!
