GS-408-09 Quantitative Plant Ecologist (TERM)

The Pacific Northwest Research Station anticipates advertising a 
full-time, limited-term, Quantitative Plant Ecologist position at the GS-9 
level.  The position will be located at the Wenatchee Forestry Sciences 
Laboratory in Wenatchee, Washington. The position will be funded for an 
initial period of 13 months, but may be extended up to a maximum term of 
four years, depending on continued availability of funding and incumbent 
performance.  The starting salary is expected to be $47,448 per year.

The Quantitative Plant Ecologist will contribute as a support scientist in 
the research program of the Ecosystem Dynamics and Environmental Change 
(EDEC) Team at the Wenatchee Forestry Sciences Laboratory. Team research 
topics include: 1) forest vegetation responses to climatic variability and 
climatic change; 2) restoration of ecosystem structure and function in 
fire-prone forest and savanna ecosystems; and 3) ecology and management of 
forests and rangelands following wildfire. Primary duties of the 
Quantitative Plant Ecologist will include: 1) performing statistical 
analyses of large vegetation datasets from field studies; 2) preparing 
figures and tables for journal manuscripts; 3) assisting EDEC scientists 
in study plan development, grant writing, and preparation of manuscripts 
for publication; 4) finding and reviewing scientific literature; 5) hiring 
and training field crews; 6) managing field crew activities; and 7) 
serving as the lead botanist for field studies. Some field work and travel 
will be required during the field season spanning a wide range of forest 
types and environmental settings.  Fieldwork requires the ability to work 
and travel with a 45-pound pack in steep, wet, and slippery terrain.

We are looking for an individual who is professionally trained in the 
principles and practices of plant ecology, forestry, and fire ecology; is 
proficient in statistical analyses of large, complex, ecological datasets; 
has strong botanical skills, including field identification of Pacific 
Northwest plant species; and has demonstrated strong oral and written 
communication skills.
