There is no correct definition of ecosystem, because (like many ecological objects) ecosystems are stipulated rather than recognized and described. The term was proposed (like many ecological terms) as an end run around the problems of controlling the definitions of other stipulated objects (like communities). Knock yourselves out, but the discussion will go nowhere - as it has repeatedly for the past century. It has nowhere to go. Meanwhile, for a good time, go back and read A. G. Tansley, 1935.
